June Bugs
Hunting vehicles lined up in a row. Beating the bushes until one of us made a break for it. Standing armies caught sitting down. Silver gorillas came down from the trees to fight for us. Small children showed us how to escape. Pilots took us in their planes to places we’d never seen before. Turning left, we emptied out our pockets onto the beach. In the firelight our objects glowed like turpentine. Mule ears swiveled to pick up our words. A hundred june bugs opened their legs. Walls of water rotating silently in space. The good girls all gone. The foliage yawning, stretched out its arms. Climb into our branches. Wolves and pelicans argued below. The poker games of Nature.
