Warm black wings

Whenever you’re ready, she whispered. You know where to find me. I took off my coat and sat down. She smiled across the table. So tell me about your new life. It’s nothing without you. My arms reach across the table on their own, cupping her hands in mine. Come back with me. I have a place for you, for us. I built it out of logs and rocks and mud and smoke. Fish swim around it joyfully. Birds and beasts can take us there. Stop, she said. You’re too much. No, I’m not enough, I said. Words fail me underground waiting for you. I’m digging my way out, back to you. The ice is gone. The sun is out. I can care for you. I can hold you all day and all night. Will you take me up on warm black wings? She touched my face. Would you like something to eat? I can make you a sandwich.
