Why NYC is cheesy

So I realized something the other day about why being in NYC grates on me so much at times. The only thing I really have to compare it to is freshman year of college, where everyone is thrown into this big new exciting social gumbo, and all of a sudden, people change their whole personality at the drop of a hat. Kids dye their hair, start smoking, get piercings & tattoos (hey! wait a minute). Hehe, yeah, but in particular, I’m talking about like the “hipsters,” which is a word that I hate even to use for some reason. Like I don’t want to give them their own special word which allows them to claim some different identity than anybody else. It’s like, they are just regular damn kids, like anyone. They aren’t anything special, and they certainly aren’t especially cool. But, just like in freshman year at art school, you can see them walking around, looking furtively at each other, trying to scope each other out, and like make sure they look cool enough and listen to all the right music and crap. It’s just like college, except without any classes or other unifying structure, beyond this constant quest to become cool and “New York”.

I mean, yeah, this happens everywhere, I realize that. But I think I had just gotten almost completely out of that sort of loop, after spending almost four years out of college, in a variety of regular steady jobs, with just ordinary people, most of whom weren’t my age at all. So its a bit of a shock to be dumped back into that all of a sudden.

But like, who the fuck cares? I haven’t the least bit interest in becoming any more “New York” than I already am. I mean, I like crossing the street really aggressively and stuff, but besides that, I don’t know, a lot of it just seems to hollow and useless. I mean, I know that you can find people and things that transcend all that, but you know, it’s not the easiest thing to do. But oh well. No one said any of this should be easy, so I guess I have nothing to complain about really.
