I’m not trying to prove it
I just wanted to further highlight the end section of that Alan Watts article I put in here, where he says:
- “I’m not trying to sell you on this idea in the sense of converting you to it; I want you to play with it. I want you to think of its possibilities. I’m not trying to prove it, I’m just putting it forward as a possibility of life to think about.”
I think that is such a good eloquent way of describing why I’m into all this occult stuff. I know it probably baffles a lot of people on some level.
To me, what I am getting at, more or less, is this: that what you normally see as reality is just one of many possibilities. And that if you want to, you can load up all kinds of alternatives, sort of like programs running in your mind, each one serving a different purpose, and executing in a very different style.
Robert Anton Wilson talks a lot about reality tunnels, and training yourself to intentionally escape and enter into specific lines of thinking. At the end of each chapter in his book “Prometheus Rising” he has all these weird exercises to break you free from your way of thinking, with such activities as “learn karate,” “go to an aquarium and imagine your a fish,” “read a neo-nazi newspaper and try to understand where they are coming from”. Shit like that. Basically loading up alternate mental programs, and then realizing ultimately, that you yourself have your own mental program running constantly, and that once you become aware of it, you can begin to transcend the programming, and really be who you are, instead of what someone or culture tried to make you.
It’s pretty interesting. But yeah, all this occult stuff, to me, I say it again and again, that for most of it, it doesn’t matter to me if its “true” or “real”. Those are the concerns of a strictly rational mind. I prefer words like “cool” or “completely nuts” to describe it. You know, you describe the quality or the value of it, rather than the legitimacy of everything. Like you don’t go around saying “blue isn’t a REAL color,” but people say that about ideas all the time, you know? All I want is that you entertain these notions. I don’t care if you believe them or reject them, but I think they are a great way to give your mind a run for its money.
