Okay, so this weekend, I partook in what some might refer to as “getting high” or perhaps “smoking up,” which is always really fun. I hadn’t for a while - anyway, we ended up at Dougherty’s “pub” across the street from Rite Aid, and I was eating some nachos (which were WAY too salty), and then, for some inexplicable reason, everyone started talking about holograms and holographic realities and stuff. And not everyone was stoned either, this is just the sort of shit that my friends will get into sometimes. Anyway, and then John started saying that this other kid Greg was really just a hologram, and that he represented the corporate interests of AOLTimeWarner, and that he was not only doing advanced individualized marketing, but also collecting tons of valuable customer research as well.
And that just fucking blew my mind apart.
Completely. And all the kings horses and all the kings men couldn’t put humpty back together again. At least, not while I was still high. That’s for damn sure.
But anyway, imagine that though. At some point in the future, when free-standing computer graphics are not only a reality, but a pervasive part of every day life - I am just about positive that companies would totally take advantage of that, and have like “holographic friends” which do advanced marketing and research. It’s crazy. It’s a crazy thing to think about.
And then, we were also saying that “in reality” it was actually 30 years in the future, and we were all sitting at home, tied down with families and boring jobs, and that we were all holographically and collectively reliving this weekend of our youth, back when we were wild and carefree. Or else, that just John was reliving it, and we were all holographic projections from his memory.
Yeah, it totally flipped my wig, much in the same way that the best Philip K Dick stuff does, where I am just like “WHAAA!!???” It was totally great. It opened up all these new doorways to ideas and possibilities and understandings of things. I’ll see if I can get down in writing what some of them are over the next week.
