The blackout - still bringing people together days later
Last night, here I was minding my own business, when I got an email ominously entitled “The Stinger Club” (which, if your memory fails you, is where our marching band parade turned into a raucous dance party the night of the blackout):
- Hi Tim,
So I read the entry regarding the blackout in NYC on your website. It was a fantastic night indeed. I agree with you; it was one of my best nights in Brooklyn as well. It was a spontaneous parade. You see, I was holding a rehearsal a block away from Grand Street and we had the ‘bright’ idea of bringing some music to the streets. It obviously worked! I am glad to know you had a great a time as we did…
Cheers,
Sebastian
aka: One of the trombonists who was playing while you were walking barefoot in the Stinger Club, being sprayed on, thankfully, by the bar tender.
Needless to say, I was thrown for a loop that history had come back to haunt me like that! Simply amazing, all of it, the blackout, the music, the dancing, and the internet aftermath. I immediately wrote back to this fine fellow, asking him how he found my site, and what the deal with his music group was and stuff, to which I just received a cheery reply:
- Hey Tim,
Glad to make your night! Well, I was wondering about that night and just did a seach for grand street+trombones+blackout, and your was one of the first to pop out, so I read it and thought, hey, why don’t I just write to him and tell him that we were having such a fucking blast as well. Yeah, we’re part of a larger group called the Hungry March Band, check us out at hungrymarchband.com - and sure I don’t mind at all if you post my email. It is very amazing how the blackout btought out such different ‘habits’ in people that night…
Anyway, I’m going to another rehearsal now (not w/the brass band though) so let’s keep in touch.
Cheers!

Awesome! They totally rule! So they were just one small part of the “Hungry March Band”. They are a “20 or so piece Brass March Band based in New York City” and yeah, that neatly ties my whole glorious weekend into a perfect little package. Yay America! I can’t wait to go see these guys play with the whole band sometime. It must be totally mind-bendingly good.
