Oh, and another time in highschool, I worked up this little sign on a piece of cardboard that said “I’M HOLDING A SIGN”, and then walked around with it in like towns, and past restaurant windows and stuff. It was a great time. Sometimes I got a friend to come with me and walk next to me with a sign that said “ME TOO” or, if they were feeling saucy, they could turn it over on the back to where it said “I’M NOT”.

The best story out of all that though is this time we did that in a movie theatre lobby, right, cause we were picking up my friend from work. And I’m walking around, holding my sign, and somebody taps me on the shoulder, and I turn around, and its a rent-a-cop. And he exclaims, “What are you doing?” To which, I ever so cleverly reply, “I’m holding a sign.” Hehehehehehe. Ah, its as funny and ironic today as it was all those years ago.

Without saying another word, he turns on his little chest radio thing, and calls his supervisor. He says to him, “He’s holding a sign that says ‘I’m holding a sign.’” And the supervisor replies, “What’s the purpose of that?” The guard looks at me. I shrug, say, “I don’t know. It’s funny.” He doesn’t seem to find it at all funny though, and informs me that I have to put down my sign, and leave the premises.

Looking back, I should have refused, because really, what would they have done, arrested me for holding a sign, saying that I was doing just that?” Preposterous. My case would be thrown out, I would make the news, and I would be a local hero for a day. It would have been great. I could have been notorious. I guess I could still do it sometime though, because it seems like it could work anywhere in the right situation. I also want to make a mental note to myself about that sign idea, if I ever find myself on the streets trying to drum up money, during my cross country trip. That sign is a great way to get people to stop and talk to you.
