One time, in highschool, on one of our merry misadventures, we did something pretty hilarious. I was remind of it by a comment from the owner of monkeymanifesto on friday night fishfry.
So the thing we did was to make a fake survey, and print up all the questions in a little stapled bundle of joy, and attached to the whole thing to a clipboard, to which we, of course, tied a pen on a string. The questions started out simple, to lure people in, such as “Did you vote for Clinton?” and “Would you vote for him again?” Stuff like that. Stuff about like religion, social matters, that was like the first ten.
After that, it started getting progressively more preposterous. We would ask people if once they popped, could they indeed stop? Do these glasses make me look fat? Shit! I cant even remember the really funny ones. Let me go see if I can dig it up… YES! Jackpot! I found it! Thanks for waiting.
Alright. On the cover, we typed SUNY New Paltz, which is a small college in upstate NY. We wrote “Sociology 212, Instructor: Dr. William Gordon” on the front and titled it “Psychological Communications Survey,” which was chosen for its intentional obscurity, because if you think about it, it doesn’t really mean anything, but at first glance, you see a bunch of words that seem semi-important.
Hehe. One of our questions was “Do you believe Communism works, in theory?” Thats pretty funny. Some others: “Sunny D or the Purple Stuff?” Also, we checked off or wrote in answers. Interestingly, no one chose the Purple Stuff. Theres a question here asking if they celebrate Bastille day, or if they’ve ever seen Elvis. “River Dance or Lord of the Dance?” Let’s see, “Who is your favorite Jackson?” (Responses include Reggie, and Tito) “Who do you think would win in a fight between Oprah and Ricki Lake?” (Oprah unanimously won!)
Hm. Well, those are alright, I guess, for high school humor. Looking back, they don’t seem like the comedic jewels from heaven that they seemed at the time. Part of the hilarity though was that we actually went out and surveyed people, mainly other customers at the local Barnes & Noble and Tower Records.
