Rebecca’s questions

These are from the interview dealy-thingy, sent to me by Rebecca. I’ll fill in the answers as I get to them.

  • what is your favorite tarot deck and why?
My favorite tarot deck is probably the Vertigo Tarot deck published by DC comics. It is a syncretic fusing of the traditional tarot figures with characters from DC comics Vertigo series of comic books. I think joining the arcane figures with ones from comics does a great service to people who want to understand what the tarot means and is all about. It certainly brought me closer to understanding it. Also, it features work from one of my favorite illustrators, Dave McKean, who did a lot of cover art for Vertigo Titles back in the day. Also, the little explanation book by Rachel Pollack that it comes with is absolutely spectacular and is some of the best writing on the tarot figures and symbology that I have ever seen.

I also really like the Vertical Oracle deck by Antero Alli, although it is not strictly-speaking a Tarot deck - it is a general oracular deck. Rob Brezsny uses images from it in his Free Will Astrology horoscopes

  • have you seen the anime Metropolis? if so, what did you think about it?
I have never seen that movie, although I was talking about it at work yesterday with the guy I work with. My favorite anime (and I have not seen a lot, actually) is Princess Mononoke by Hayao Miyazaki. That man is a damned genius. His understanding of stories and people is so vast and important. Plus Princess Mononoke is WAY HOT!
  • what about you do you identify as Saturnian?
From what I understand of Saturn in astrology, it represents the idea of limitations, and spans of time, and sometimes even bondage. It’s often portrayed in a fairly negative light, because we don’t like to think about being constrained by anything in our lives. It’s also seen as pretty harsh, cold and forbidding. The way I like to think of this idea of limitations, and how I identify with Saturn, is in realizing that limitations aren’t bad, they are just a natural part of life. Limitations are just another way to understand the shape and outlines of things, and to understand how they work and fit together into something bigger. As far as traits associated with the Saturnian character type, I feel like I do or have embodied a lot of them in my life.

    • Positives: Practical, cautious, constructive, responsible, patient, ambitious, thrifty, solid, reliable, trustworthy, good endurance and self-discipline.
    • Negatives: Mean, selfish, despondent, narrow-minded, severe, aloof, acquisitive, dogmatic, heartless, cruel, suffers depressions, hardship.

The only one of those I would say that hasn’t come up in my life is acquisitiveness.
Here’s a great description of Saturn from a book my aunt sent me:

Rules form, discipline, responsibility, organization, ambition, capacity for a career, limitations and delays. Saturn governes theories and scientific law, older persons, depth, patience, timing, tradition, conventionality, orthodoxy and productive use of time. Saturn represents the principles of truth, contraction, or solidification of wisdom and of aging. Its action is slow and lasting. saturn is the taskmaster of the zodiac
  • what was your most disgusting eating experience?
  • what is your favorite candy, and why?
These last two questions totally blow. What is this, an interview for TeenBop magazine? I’m going to “put the kibosh” on them in favor of you sending me another two less throw-away questions to replace them. I notice that both of them are about consumption, visceral and bodily: one negative in the extreme and one positive in the extreme. I feel like you are really asking something else, but that’s how it came out. I’m curious as to what morsel of me you are really trying to draw out.
