The mythological undertones of Freddy vs. Jason
So I was thinking on my way home last night from seeing Freddy vs. Jason about the movie and characters in relation to that Erich Neumann book that I just finished, and that guy’s approach to all that mythological crap. Basically, if you looked at it with his eyes, its a pretty classic and good mythological piece, which “follows the rules”. Jason is representative of a mind under the sway of the unconscious, “the Great Mother”. He has this angry grandmother figure who’s rules and urging he follows blindly, like a force of nature. He is her her guardian, as well as her symbolic phallic consort (if you took his huge knife as a phallic symbol, of course). And then you have Freddy, who I think Neumann would interpret as an ego gone awry, too deep into the realm of the Great Father - consciousness, so that it becomes perverted, bent in on itself, and in a bad relationship with the unconscious powers. Also, Jason’s weakness is water, which is symbolic of the unconscious depths, and Freddy’s is fire, which is symbolic of the vivifying spirit of consciousness. Another element I was thinking about is how Jason is kind of like the Grim Reaper, in his role - just acting upon laws of justice in the universe, enforcing a moral order, and playing a role in which he really has no say or interest, just plays without any real personal involvement. Plus, his weapon is a huge blade, almost like the scythe. Then, I guess you could maybe compare Freddy to the Devil, who is all about crazy machinations, and schemes, and has complex and strange goals benefitting himself. Plus, Freddy is all about torture and terror. But I don’t know how far I would go with that line of reasoning, cause I think the Devil also represents some sort of force of nature, although it is significantly more abstract than what the Grim Reaper represents. Anyway, fun fun fun. Good movie. Good stuff.
