What if all email and online communication is not only monitored for references to anti-government acts and plans, but also for anti- and pro- brand and corporate information? What if Hotmail could sell the text block surrounding any mention of “Coca-cola” to Coke’s research and marketing divisions, which would then go to work on it, using it to further develop and statistically refine and predict their future product releases. How often have you talked online in some form with a friend about a product? What if someone’s listening? Does it matter? Does that change how we interact? Can we speak in code? Can we develop a system of ciphers which nullifies the value of any information we contribute to the system? Is that what ironic detachment is? Can’t they just take and use that as well? Can’t they?
