Now Disappearing: Anonymity

I know I’ve been going on and on about the dastardly RFID technolology for the past week or two. And if you haven’t sat up and taken notice, it’s well past time. This technology is having its public premiere in Chicago this week. I personally see it as having the potential to become one of the biggest threats to privacy and anonymity of all time. Within a few years, these tags are going to be in everything you buy, and anyone with the proper equipment can track your purchases, belongings and use patterns.

Imagine you had these tags in your TV, DVD player, computer, stereo, etc. Someone looking for a house to rob could drive down your street or walk down your apartment hall with a fucking transmitter and do a sweep of who has the most expensive items, and a myriad of details about it, and then BOOM! Just rob them. No more muss and fuss breaking in and finding just a bunch of old 8 tracks and a broken card table.

Other applications of this technology that have been put on the table are to put them in cars, registering your location, speed, critical safety information. Much worse than that is the fact that by 2003, these chips will be in Euro banknotes, and I’m sure American dollars a few years after that. Goodbye to the anonymity of cash transactions.

Seriously. This shit is evil. I hesitate to point to the “mark of the beast” but if ever anything’s been a candidate for it, its this. And the worst part is that its going to be all over and everywhere around you before you even realize its happening.
