Seinfeldian psychodrama
Was just thinking about discussing with Erin whether and how Seinfeld could be looked at in psychological symbolism. I know some people think this sort of approach takes the fun out of stuff, but not for me. Its a blast. Anyway, the show is obviously centered around Jerry, and the other characters are different reflections of him, according to this interpretation. Elaine would be his anima, the feminine version or aspect of him. George and Kramer are kind of flipsides of the same thing - which is Jerry’s sort of carefree lifestyle as a comedian. Kramer is almost like what happens if you take that too far, and have a kind of disconnect from regular reality and thinking. And George is it not taken far enough, where he’s always trying to break through, but can never quite get it together. And Newman maybe would be his shadow side or something, his archnemesis, the bearer of repressed aspects of his personality. They frequently come to conflict, but just as frequently, they work together in some way to solve something. I really want to see that episde again where they run into the bizarro versions of themselves. That shit’s hilarious. I just recently saw the episodes where they were working on that pilot for NBC, where they have that guy who gets in an accident, and the judge sentences him to be the other guy’s butler. Hilarious.
