“Marge, may I play ‘Devil’s Advocate’?”

I’ve been thinking a good bit about privacy and individual freedoms from the opposite perspective of what I would normally. You know, thinking about how shit like RFID chips would actually be good for people, and how total knowledge and records of people’s activities would be useful.

I know, it sounds crazy to me too, when I say it like that, but I’ve been thinking about it kind of more pragmatically. From a standpoint of, too many people have too much money and plans already in the works for me or anyone to stop this shit now.

And also from the standpoint of, what if in order for human consciousness to progress, technology also has to progress pass these points, which I now see as dangerous or threatening? What if complete intrusion into people’s privacy will accidentally help force millions of people to become more open and honest in their dealins? What if it helps people to move beyond their individual egos and look at some greater picture, and fuse into some kind of higher unified consciousness?

Admittedly, this sort of thinking scares me, but is tantalizing nonetheless - I can’t help but want to think through both sides of it. What if my insistence on personal liberty and privacy is evolutionarily antiquated? If you looked at the question from a mystical standpoint, don’t most traditions say that the individual is but an instance, a reflection of something higher, something more real - a drop of water as compared to the ocean? Don’t most of the mystical systems of humanity teach you that you are that ocean, and not that drop of water?

I mean, I know that corporations and government aren’t seeking to implement these technologies for mystical purposes of unification and identification with higher realities. They are actually doing it so that they have more complete statistics with which to more accurately predict consumer/tax-payer behavior. And as with any system of control, the whole thing is and will be shrouded in fear and deceit, and forcing people into deeper isolation. But what if we can make it backfire? How can we do that? That’s what I’ve been thinking about lately.
