The O.C.
The other night, Catherine and I were discussing the O.C. over some falafel. She raised a good point, which I myself hadn’t consciously noticed: that the two main male characters are portrayed as being like all deep and concerned with substance and stuff, but that the girls are completely wooden and shallow. A good point, like I said, which got me thinking about how that show is now in the stage where the girl characters are starting to obtain substance, because of their interaction with the guy characters. And that just got me thinking about how much of contemporary story-telling is based on that sort of chauvinist model: where the man carries like truth or goodness, and he recognizes the seed of that in the woman, and by him, she is able to bring that out. I mean, I guess it works in both directions too though in stories and in life, since it ties into the whole anima/animus thing, where your spiritual other-side inspires you to move beyond the level you’re currently at into some new realm of wholeness and truth.
