Seeing the future
My little sister just entered tenth grade. She is silly. She lives with my parents and, as such, leads kind of a sheltered life. I am trying to help change that in whatever small way by sending her a CD full of the best and brightest of my mp3 collection.
She’s never used an mp3 player before, so I took the liberty of downloading winamp for her, and putting it on the disc, along with a little instruction guide, and a dedication. Here is a couple excerpts from it:
- On the CD is over 12 hours of my favorite music ever. There is some really awesome shit on there, that when I listen to it, it makes me think of all kinds of different things - good and bad - that have happened in my life, and its a really great feeling. Maybe some of these songs will be able to do that for you some day.
…This music is best enjoyed in the privacy of your room with door closed, volume up, possibly a candle burning, maybe some dancing around. Whatever seems appropriate at the time. There is a part in the movie, Almost Famous (I don’t know if you saw it), where the boy’s older sister runs away from home, and leaves the boy all her classic rock albums. And she tells him that if he listens to them with the lights off, and looks straight into the flame of a burning candle while playing them, he will see the future. You should probably try that. I’m not joking.
Anyway, yeah. I wish somebody had done this for me when I was that age, just sit me down and learn me something about awesome music. It would have saved me a lot of trouble messing around with a lot of other crap. Arguably some of that crap was important for my development into the reclusive dork that I am now, but whatever. Anyway, I think its a delightful little present. I hope she likes it.
