Pressure cooker

Ever since I saw it on dispositive, I have been thinking about the quote from William Gibson’s blog, about how if he is blogging, that means he is not writing novels. He likens it to Joseph Cornell making those little collage boxes, where blogging is like collecting all those little pieces, but never assembling them into those delightful little boxes. And he says that if he is blogging, then it blows off too much steam for him to be writing fiction, cause it splits his concentration and energy.

I think this is interesting, cause, I don’t know that I work the same way, but I’m curioous as to what would happen if I stopped blogging and forced all my efforts into some bigger format. For me, I find blogging useful because it sort of tricks me into building up a lot of momentum, which I can then push in any direction that strikes my fancy. I also like juggling a lot of different things at once in my mind, and blogging is great for that in a way that few other forms of writing seem to be.

That said, I’m still really really interested to see what would happen if I turned all the valves to off for like a week. This would mean: (1) no blogging, (2) no email writing over a paragraph at a time (i used to write crazy amounts of emails before i blogged - sometimes i still do). What would happen if I just held onto all the goodies running through me for a week until they built up and built up and built up and BOOM!

Maybe I’ll try it.
