I was playing the “traditional family card game” with my sister and my other sister’s husband whilst in Connecticut. They call it Pitch, but it’s also referred to as Setback, or High-Low-Jack. The object of the game is to collect those point cards in trump, as well as game points, which are tens and face cards. I found a version online called Nebraska 4 Point Pitch, but the rules are different. The way my family plays, once you’re dealt your cards, everyone makes there bids, and you then discard what you don’t want, and are dealt replacements. The thing there is that you can intentionally bury point cards that way, and adds the element of surprise into what you get next. Also, this online version is cut-throat, everyone for themself, but my parents also play teams too, when there are four people. Apparently, my dad is quite vicious at the game, and will always try to take a two or three bid, even if he’s only got a wad of spit and a prayer in his hand. Funny, cause my dad otherwise is very much the opposite. Also, when I used to play strategy games with him on Nintendo, he was always more analytical and cautious. I guess cards is where he lets it all hang out. I have a suspicion that he also learned Pitch from his dad, and that’s probably a bit of his panache that is shining through when my dad plays.
(I’ve not played a lot of cards ever, but I really took a shine to it when I played last week. I used to also really like to play Hearts on the computer. I like games like that where you can really screw somebody over by giving them the Queen of Spades, or whatever, but at the same time, you run the Risk of screwing yourself by enabling them to “Shoot the Moon”. Fun game. I think I want to try to get good at card games when I start travelling).
