Dieing online

This is an interesting topic from Coloring Outside the Lines. It’s about what would happen to your blog if you were to die suddenly. The person they are referring to has a livejournal account, and apparently if you stop blogging long enough, you journal will just get “purged due to inactivity.” There’s also some comments about how how there are news groups about giving people suicide advice, and that some parents are suing the ISP who hosted it, because their kid took that advice.

Anyway, that’s crazy. I mean, suicide sucks, and death is a tragic mystery for everybody, but I think people can and should have access to this sort of information. Just as everyone has a right to live, they also have the right not to, if that is their choice, even if we can’t understand the cosmic mystery of it ourselves.

But yeah, the whole thing makes me wonder, if I were to die suddenly, I’m sure that my web hosting and domain name would just run out after a while, and then I would disappear from the internet without a trace. That’s kinda freaky. It feels like I’m building something much more permanent than that, but maybe all it really amounts to is something that some computer will ultimately decide has been inactive too long, and will purge automatically.
