Asherah & the Goddess

Man, I really need to read up on my near eastern mythology. I know bits and pieces, but I don’t have a clear understanding of how all of them fit together, and they most certainly do - in an incredible and important way, plus they heavily influenced European mythology too.

So anyway, this is a good list of Mesopotamian Mythological figures. I happened upon this, cause I found some references on Amazon (while looking up “the lion of judah”) about the Hebrew god Yahweh having had a wife or consort named “Asherah” who was a Canaanite fertility goddess, also known as Ashtaroth, Astarte, Ishtar, Isis, and Inanna, and also related to Eostara (the pagan goddess to whom Easter was celebrated).

Right, so I think this also ties into the whole temple prostitute thing, which theorizes that both the “Virgin” Mary and Mary Magdalene were actually sacred prostitutes at Ishtar temples, and that Jesus was a child of such a union, as children conceived of temple sex were called “children of god”. Also, you may recall that Ishtar was the original “Whore of Babylon“.

Anyway, I found mentioned that Ishtar is often accompanied mythological by lions, which ties back somehow to the Lion of Judah thing. I also discovered in my ramblings that Haile Salassie is said to be the 225th generation of the union of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, and thus is supposed to be the rightful heir to the Throne of David, and is called by his followers the Lion of Judah.

Oh, and here’s a tarot article by Rachel Pollack that I want to come back and check out…

Also want to come back to this site about the Dark Goddesses.

Fishfright: I recommend checking out the stuff about Ereshkigal (also this), and the one about Persephone. They say in this one stuff about how Kore-Persephone was a composite god.

And another one for me: an article about Kali (with lots of pictures) that I want to check out.
