Dual citizenship

Crap! I’m ALMOST eligible to apply for dual citizenship in Ireland, but not quite. I have a great grandfather on my dad’s side who was born in Ireland, which would make him automatically eligible to apply for it, but not me, unless my dad had applied for it before the time of my birth. Crap crap crap. So close. It would be so sweet to have another option for if and when the shit hits the fan here. I’m gonna keep researching it in any case. Maybe there’s some loophole…

Oh right, this all started cause I asked my mom about the family names and stuff on the irish & scottish sides. She gave me a rundown, but she apparently doesnt know that much about it, compared to the french side…

the quick version:

my dad’s grandparents were

  • james patrick o’conner, born 1880 killorglin, ireland (parents patrick & mary dunn)
  • agnes elizabeth mcColl born 1891 johnstone, scotland
(apparently these two met when james worked in the coal mines in scotland)

my mom has traced that mcColl’s to living also in kilbirnie, scotland for a few generations. Some of the relative’s name here are (i dont know how they are related)

  • stewart mcColl
  • william murphy
  • mary coyle
  • jane mcAuley

Apparently also, my mom has some ties to Dunnes from the same region of scotland, which she thinks are tied in. Also on my mom’s side are the family names mcKernan and McDonnell, who were supposed to be scotch-irish, which means they were probably scottish people relocated to northern ireland. Also, there are the Youngs who may have been either Scottish or English. She thinks English, but said there’s a chance they were scottish.
