I’m gonna read me some more about the Roman Vestal Virgins, who kept the sacred fire of Vesta burning.. They apparently had all kinds of legal rights that other women didn’t have, which reminds me instantly of that thing I read about the Greek hetaera, and how they had all kinds of unusual legal rights and privileges, although they were prostitutes or concubines, and the Vestals were strictly chaste for the thirty years of their service. The punishment for lost chastity of a Vestal Virgin was live burial, because that was considered the best way to kill them without spilling their blood.
