the timboucher experience

I used to make a lot of drawings like this, but just started to again the past few days. I don’t really know what prompted it. Just sort of happened.

But I do sort of know what they are for, and what goes into them. My intention is sort of similar to something called a veve in voodoo. A veve is a ritual drawing that is made in powder to invoke gods during worship ceremonies. It is a sigil, a magic seal, which somehow calls upon whatever entity or force or process is associated with it. I always liked the one they use for Legba, the threshold guardian:

So the sort of idea I’m playing with here is that by drawing and concentrating on these, I possibly focus some sort of of psychic energy inside me towards certain ends. Right now, the goals are kind of vague. Mostly exploration and opening, but maybe as I become more skilled with them, other things will present themselves.

It also relates very much to something a shitty painting teacher once told me about my work. He said “You crystallize energy.” And BOOM! Right there. That was it. He was right. That’s clearly what I’ve always been after in my artwork, and in another way, in my whole life and in the people around me. So these drawings are some sort of attempt to crystallize energies in me.
