Pookah

I also just remembered that there’s a thing from Robert Anton Wilson about some big rabbit god that he called Pookah. I’m gonna run down that trail for a monet as well.

“The pookah takes many forms, but is most famous when he appears as a giant, six-foot white rabbit - which is the form most Americans know from the play and film, Harvey. Whatever form the pookah takes, he retains the special ability of his species, which is like that of Thoth in Egyptian legend, Coyote in Native American myth or Hanuman the Divine Monkey in Hindu lore - he can move us from one universe, or Belief System, into another, and he likes to play games with our ideas about ‘reality.’”

And from here

I have also considered the player on the other side as more impersonal, like the Tao, or more bizarre, like Shiva Dancing, or more abstract, like Philip K. Dick’s Vast Active Living Information System (VALIS.) Mostly, though I think of the player on the other side as a pookah — a resident of Ireland, in rabbit form, who may at any time dump a truckload of the Unknown and Inexplicable right on your doorstep.

Loosely related to the Phooka of Irish legend, I think. See this page also.
