Night-mares
I was just doing some research for a friend about a spirit that appears as a horse in profile, but from front view appears as sort of demonic or something. It reminded me of the goetic demons who can take animal form at times. I found two who are specifically known to take horse forms:
It also lead me to a painting by John Fuseli from the late 1700’s, called “the Nightmare” which has an incubus sitting on the chest of a dreaming woman, with an evil looking horse in the background. There’s also this alternate version of the painting. According to this page, the painting is about Hecuba’s nightmare surrounding the fall of Troy.
This also relates to the “old hag” phenomenon which is more commonly referred to nowadays as sleep paralysis, and is also a component of modern day alien abduction phenomena. Here’s a folklore page about nightmare-demons.
