Dumuzuwa
This is a follow-up to a post from a week or two ago, wherein I was researching a spirit that appeared horse-like from the side view, but demonic/reptilian from the front.
I recently got a note from a fellow describing himself also as a budding investigator, asking if we could use each other as professional resources, which seemed like a good idea. So I asked if he had heard of anything like I just described, and his response was pretty good. Plus I hadn’t heard of anything like this, and hadn’t seen any similar info online. So here it is, so it belongs to the world now.
- It shows Resemblence to a creature known as a Dumuzawa, In ancient Uruk these spirits were said to act like both protectors and harassers of men, with emphasis on the later. They appeared as a beast of terrible form, but when they would start to leave, or turn away from an onlooker they became like unto a great Steed or sometimes like a great Serpant. It is usually placed in the same groupings as once living entities who have been wronged, it is also placed in with some lore related to psychic vampires. I have seen many studies on these spirits but have little else to tell you, other than the fact that the writings say that if you ever attack the spirit or show it any sign of fear it will cause ruin for the next 2 cycles of the Moon (or about 56 days according to some Translations). I couldn’t think of much else that seemed like it, but will let you know if I find a better match….or information on dealing with such a spirit. If you need more let me know, or if this information can’t help you let me know anyway.
For now I will look at my research on Equestrian Spirits and Transmorphs.
As I said, no mention of dumuzawa online. I asked him what his resource was on this. Will post that info here when he gets back to me.
Nice work everybody.
UPDATE!
My “colleague” just wrote back to me:
- The Dumuzawa is found primarily in text, but you might find info about them from Dr. Shukers sites…I am not sure. I read of it in a text on Chaldee Sorcery. I did read when I went back that the Dumuzawa often is subject to Warding if someone carries water from a free moving river or stream in a vial with them. Try to find refrences in Accredited books on Uruk or Sumerian Mythology.
I don’t know who Dr. Shuker is. But I think it’s this guy, Karl Shuker, who has some books on cryptozoology and stuff.
