Yesterday was the start of Saturnalia, the Roman festival devoted to Saturn. I think originally it was just the 17th and 18th, but then was extended till the 23rd or something like that. Here’s the wikipedia entry. Plus another thing about it:

Candles and lamps chased away the spirits of darkness.
