I just remembered a bizarre dream I had last night, wherein I was talking to one of my sisters or somebody about getting the phrase “Eloi, Eloi, Lema Sabachthani?” tattooed on my head. But instead of like an actual tattoo, it was more like I was going to get these big silvery metal block letters attached to my scalp. It was totally nuts. I was discussing it with her, like it was no big deal either, and she had a phrase that she wanted to get as well.
Anyway, if you don’t know, this what Jesus is supposed to have yelled out right before he died. It means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
- When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. At three o’clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” When some of the bystanders heard it, they said, “Listen, he is calling for Elijah.” And someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. Now when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was God’s son!” (Mark 15:33 - 41)
Anyway, the way I was reminded of the dream was an odd one too. I was looking up the roots of the name “Axel,” and saw that it related to Absalom, which is related to the Hebrew name Abishalom, which meant “my father is peace.” According to this, “In the Old Testament he was a son of King David who led a revolt against his father.” And the “Ab-” in front of the name, which is from the Hebrew for “father” totally sent this trigger to some place in my dream that was related to the “Eloi, Eloi” thing.
