This article on MSNBC talks about how video games don’t trigger emotional responses in people, and how getting them to do so is the “holy grail” of the industry. I think that’s completely bunk. I’ve had emotional involvement and attachment to video games as long as I can remember. Whether it was going to Toys R Us to buy the Zelda II, or faking being sick so I could stay home and play Dragon Warrior IV, or even just that sweaty-palmed tingly anticipation when you fight a boss character for a level - and then you win! Or get killed. Goddamn, maybe I’m just a Grade A Certified Nerd (which is probably true), but I’ve always had that emotional connection to games. But anyway, it’s an interesting topic, even if the article isn’t that good.
