While driving up Charles St. the other day, I pointed out to my girlfriend, a small storefront with a blue-on-white lettered sign that read “Eckankar,” relating what little I knew about this small religious group. Which wasn’t much. But today, I just came across an article online about that belief system, which has spurred me to further research. Basically that article talks about how one of their central beliefs is the idea of soul travel, which they maintain to be different from astral travel. Here’s a brief run-down of their ideas from that ReligiousTolerance.org site. Also, here’s the official Eckankar site. Supposedly, they are also interested in using occult practices to escape the wheel of reincarnation… They also have a PDF called “About Eckankar” that you can download on their site. I was also under the impression that they practice some sort of communication with the dead, although I have yet to find anything about it. Anyway, more about that later maybe…
