Spring-Heeled Jack

I was just looking over at About’s Paranormal site. They have an article about popular monsters, and I came across one I had never heard of before, Spring-Heeled Jack. At first, I was like, “oh, so thats where that song comes from” but then I realized I was thinking of “Cotton-Eye Joe”.

But anyway, I found a much more detailed account of Sping-Heeled Jack’s craziness. Basically, rumors of his activities existed in England for more than a hundred years. He was a tall thin powerful figure wearing a strange suit, helmet and cape. He had a penchant for mild sexual molestation of young girls. But the weird part is that many many people saw him leap up to 25 feet in the air. He would leap over walls and rooftops and things. Also, he could spit blue flame of some sort. Nobody ever caught him, although vigilante groups were organized, and the Duke of Wellington himself rode out on horseback armed with two pistols trying to locate the monster.

Some people think he was some kind of alien, and explain his jumping abilities with that hypothesis:

When the American astronauts first landed on the Moon, they discovered that the easiest way to move around the lunar surface was by hopping, because their legs were too powerful to walk in the Moon’s weak gravity-field. In fact, the astronauts could have jumped over thirty feet in height had they wanted to. Perhaps Springheeled jack had found himself at a similar advantage. His home planet may have been much larger than Earth, and possessed a greater gravitational pull. After being reared in his environment of high-gravity, Jack would experience the Earth as a low-gravity world, just as the Moon is to Earthlings.

That’s totally cool. Here’s another thing about him. There seems to be all kinds of stuff out there on him actually. Surprising I’ve never come across it before.
