Baptist Church funding terrorists in India

I’ve happened across a news item which is pretty surprising - especially in terms of never having heard it before.

It seems that there is an extremist Christian separatist group in northern India, the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT). They formed in 1989 for the stated purpose of creating an independent Christian fundamentalist state in Tripura.

People talk about them as being the Christian equivalent of the Taliban. They supposedly practice forced conversions under threat of violence, and are attempting to eradicate all traces of non-Christian culture. They attack and desecrate Hindu and Buddhist temples, as well as religious festivals. Not to mention huge amounts of reported systematic kidnappings, rape and murder.

There’s tons of information about this online, it seems. Go and check it out. Oh, and what’s more, is the government of the state of Tripura announced a while back that they had evidence to support the claim that elements of the Southern Baptist Church in America were financially supporting the “holy work” of the NLFT.

And people are using the exact same arguments about these Christian terrorists as you hear people say about Islamic extremists: that these people are fringe groups, and that Jesus wouldn’t approve of violence, etc.

I would say that I’m shocked that I haven’t heard of any of this until now, but I guess I’m not really. Especially considering the ascendancy of the fundamentalist Christian agenda within American government and culture in the past few years.
