Links & Articles on Selective Service and the Draft.

In keeping with my previous post, here’s a bunch of stuff about the SSS and the possibility of a draft.

  • A good introductory article on what happens in a draft, and different things to consider about registering and conscientious objecting. Nice overview, lots of good links.
  • A copy of the bill which would reinstate the draft, the Universal Nation Service Act. I’m sure when they end up instituting it, they will come up with some clever patriotic, vaguely christian acronym title for it to fool people into thinking its something far more benign and necessary.
  • The Selective Service System is kind enough to provide an online copy of their “Information for Registrants” booklet, so you can see just how screwed you’re going to be.

You know, I was just wondering something… the war in Iraq was never sanctioned by the U.N., right? Didn’t the whole thing violate international law outrageously in the first place? If the US govt puts forth a draft, can’t we like appeal to the UN or some shit, under the pretense that our nation is trying to force us, as conscientious citizens of the world, to participate in illegal acts of international aggression?

Anyway, back to my bullet points:

  • Here are two links to major organizations to help people resist the draft and become conscientious objectors. First, we have the Central Committee for Conscientious Objectors. Second, we have the Center on Conscience & War. I’m sure there are other groups as well. I’ll find them.
  • Here’s another good site with several different articles about how to avoid being drafted.
  • From what I’m reading, one of the other things to look for in the news is if health care workers start getting inducted as emergency back-up for the armed forces. This is supposed to be a major sign that the regular draft is following close behind.
  • An article listing seven reasons why you should refuse to register with the Selective Slavery System. Of course, a lot of these articles are ignoring the fact that most of us are already long since registered, whether it’s through applying for college loans, getting a license, registering to vote, or what-have-you. Another point a lot of these articles are banking on is that the SSS won’t have your most current address. Guess what though, all they have to do is use your social security number to access your bank records and your credit card records, and then BAM! They now know exactly where you live. I don’t know if everybody already forgot about how the government has been quietly working on a massive database system for just this purpose, to compare and share records between agencies and private organizations.
  • I think one of the best points made by any of these articles so far is the fact that the last thing policy-makers want is to rile up a bunch of war-resistance. That’s really the biggest thing between us and a draft. And the best way to keep a draft away from us, is to increase your resistance to the war & to a possible draft. Get yourself riled up over it. Get your friends and neighbors and family riled up over it. Talk about it with people. Make some kind of clamor. Make a scene. Make a stink.
  • Here is the official part of the Libertarian party’s platform, which is against the Selective Service System and conscription. Plus they have a lot of other good ideas as well. They’re not perfect, but fuck, at least they’re trying to move in the right direction, unlike the Democratic-Republican-Coke-Pepsi party.
  • A site called BushDraft.com, with lots of fun facts, figures and articles, keeping a watch on the whole situation as it unfolds. A good stop if you want to find out all the messy details, such as how the SSS wants to have a draft system ready to be unrolled by target date June 15, 2005. And lots more!

    WHOOHOO!
