Steely Dang
I’m sitting here reading an e-book version of Naked Lunch which I downloaded off a file-sharing network. I’m about half-way through. I’d love to read the whole thing in one sitting, but I don’t know that I will. Since it’s already past two in the morning.
Anyway, I was just listening to some other music, and then had the bright idea to put on some Steely Dan. Mere minutes into it, maybe only one song had passed, I got to the page where the name Steely Dan came from, the strap-on the girl uses, right after the “rim-job.” It was weird because I had totally forgotten that this was where they got the name from, but something had been suggesting in the back of my head that I put them on while I read. It was quite a little zen moment when I saw the words “Steely Dan” on the page and realized the “coincidence” that I had somehow lined up for myself.
Yeah, so the books okay. I mean it’s pretty good, but it’s not as mind-blowing as I was expecting. Maybe I just haven’t gotten far enough into it yet. Or maybe I’m just very accustomed to reading stuff that other people would see as crazy or fucked up. You know what it actually reminds me of a WHOLE LOT? It reminds me of Frank Herbert’s, Dune. I can’t totally explain why. I guess, on the surface, you could tie together these threads of rampant drug use, homosexual currents, and something about the desert. But the similarity strikes me as much greater than that, although it’s been years since I read Dune. Something about the writing and the feel of it too. Just in general. Now I’m kind of curious to look at the two books side by side.
