Big Slur

Today I finished Kerouac’s Big Sur. I don’t know. It was okay. It didn’t really grab me all that much though. Doug had loaned it to me a while back. He seems to have liked it a lot. I’ll have to talk to him in greater detail about just what he saw in it that he liked so much. I much prefer the way that Bukowski describes alcoholism and madness and stuff. One thing, stylistically, that I liked about it was all the unattributed dialogue that goes on. That’s pretty cool. Very rambling, and fits nicely into how he does his descriptive text.

That reminds me of some dude I had to read in like 11th grade English class, who had this short play about a barber shop or something. Don’t remember the author. But apparently, he did this thing where he would write one complete short story a day. His dialogue didn’t ever have quotes or anything in it, and it made the whole thing flow in a really interesting way. Oh well. Anyway, maybe I’ll try to finish up Naked Lunch tonight.
