This article about Iraq announcing emergency powers - such as the ability to declare martial law, impose curfews, conduct searches, detain individuals, freeze assets, appoint military governores and more - is pretty scary, but pretty obvious that it was going to happen. Really, the worst part of the whole thing though is that the Iraqi president OPENLY compared it to the USA PATRIOT ACT.
Danger Will Robinson! I mean, I know the Patriot Act came straight from the depths of hell, but it doesn’t give the president here the right to declare martial law, does it? Hm, I suppose he probably already has that right under some law somewhere…
Anyway, having a government like this in Iraq sounds mysteriously close to having a totalitarian dictatorship like they had under Saddam. Didn’t we go over there to give everybody the right to vote, to have a cell phone and to watch porno?
