Monsters captured by stories
Somebody sent me something interesting today. To boil it down and kind of rephrase the whole thing in my own way, it would go something like:
There exist negative energies - what we might call monsters - which have always existed along with us, and which exist largely to prey upon us. Whether you want to interpret this literally or internally/psychologically, go ahead. But, there is no real defeating these energies, because they just are indestructible, and their form is entirely mutable.
The best thing we can do with these energies is capture them. Capture them how? In really good stories. Put together a story that resonates with people, and somehow draws the essence of this monstrous energy into the vessel of this story. This otherwise dangerous energy can then be managed within the realm and rules of this story-structure… as long as this story is “valid” or “effective” with people. When this story loses its power with people, then the monster-energy is once again set loose, and has the potential to run rampant and cause chaos.
I’m being rather interpretive with what this person actually said, but I think that’s pretty much the gist of it - plus a little spin of my own. Anyway, thanks for sending it to me Jane.
