Just rediscovered a quote I’d written down a while back from, The Hero with a Thousand Faces:

    In the absence of an effective general mythology, each of us has his private, unrecognised, rudimentary, yet secretly potent pantheon of dream.

And another decent one from the Myth of Analysis, by James Hillman:

    Myths are stories which project us into participation with the phenomena they tell about so that the need for explanation falls away.
