Cleaning House

Earlier, my friend Bret left me a comment regarding some of the free-association stuff I’ve been writing lately. I thought it was pretty insightful, especially the part about how he thought it had something to do with me doing a sort of mental spring cleaning. I think this very much has to do with this “getting rid of photoshop filters” thing which I described in the post below. But I also wanted to devote some special time with the idea that this comment inspired in my head. Namely, that one of the reasons people create things, is so that they can be rid of them. So they can take some squishy thing inside, capture it into some more form, and then release it out into the wild, safely away from them and their life. I’ve never thought about it like that before, and don’t know how much I have to say about it beyond that. But it seems like a fun new way to think about being creative. Before this, I’d much more thought of creativity as having something to do with figuring out what was going on inside you, or that it was a way to kind of bring things into you, or into your life. But there’s something really freeing about this idea that you’re creating to cast things out. Almost like being creative is its own sort of self-destruction. Like you’re having a big garage sale of all the crap you are just fucking tired of having cluttering up your “house”. Or maybe you’re moving to new digs, and you need to free up some of the “cash” which you originally invested in all that stuff. This sort of attitude seems really freeing and appropriate to me right now. I’m gonna go sit on this for a while.
