Last night I happened across mention of a student resistance group in Nazi Germany, called the White Rose Society. I’m surprised I’ve never heard of them before. They put out a bunch of leaflets and some other things advocating passive resistance against Hitler. Not surprisingly, they were caught, tried and guillotined.

Here’s another good general overview of the White Rose. There’s a German movie from 1982 about them. Here’s a page about Hans & Sophie Scholl who were among the leading members of the White Rose. This page has some quotes from their leaflets. A lot of these quotes seem semi-ominous to me, with their obvious contemporary political parallels.

Speaking of cool and relevant resistance movements, you should also check out the Weathermen, if you’re not familiar with them already. There’s a really awesome documentary about them out on DVD now. I highly recommend it.
