Useful, as well as ornamental
Today I worked 10 1/4 hours of manual labor. The last time I did that is never (oh wait, that’s not totally true… oh well, on with the post!). I haven’t worked at a regular job since January of this year. And that was barely a regular job. I coasted in and left whenever I pleased. We blasted music, ate cheese fries and watched movies. That pushes back the last normal job I had to 2002. I also blasted a lot of music and watched movies unbeknownst to my employer there. But I had to at least make some kind of semblance of getting up on time, and doing some actual work.
Actual work is alright, it turns out. It’s not the end of the world. It’s been so long I nearly forgot.
The other day, I was thinking to myself, damn, I need some money. How can I get some money? Do I have something I could sell? Some crazy scheme I could cook up? Does somebody owe me money I forgot about? Maybe I could… and then it struck me! Normal people get money by working! By having jobs! Of course. That makes total sense. It had been so long that it took me like maybe 6 or 7 tries before “working” came up in my mental database of ways to make money.
Do you know what this means?
This means my lifestyle switch-over is all but complete. I have almost completely left the orbit of normal human reality. It feels great to be flying off into this huge vast space of no job, no permanent home, and nothing holding me down and causing me problems. This means I’m winning.
Of course, even winners need money. And as I’d said, I’m almost out of it. But being out of money is just a state of mind anyway. Money comes and goes. It’s like oxygen. You can’t base your life on running around tracking it down, as though there were nothing else important going on anywhere.
So anyway, yeah, I spent the day laying down flooring, cleaning graffiti off the front of a building (unsuccessfully) & vaccuuming. Tomorrow, I’m likely to do more of the same. But now, I’m tired, so I’m gonna wrap this up and hit the sack. Another day, another dollar. Think about it!
