I never thought of it like this before, but you could easily make an argument that Batman has a triple aspect, like certain mythological goddesses. You mostly hear about the Triple Goddess, as Maid, Mother & Crone. I’ve never heard of anybody talk about that from a male perspective before, but I don’t see why not. The three aspects of Batman would be: Robin/Dick Grayson, Batman/Bruce Wayne & Alfred. I remember various comics where Robin becomes the next Batman at a certain point. But I don’t think I’ve ever heard anybody suggest that Alfred was a former Batman. That would be kind of cool though, I think. It’s also interesting to note that of the three, Alfred is the only one who doesn’t have a secret identity. Maybe it’s because in that phase of development, the mythological figure has transcended its dual identity. And while in its younger phases, Batman & Robin serve the world, Alfred’s service and love has been withdrawn to serve only a single master.
