Deuce Bigalow & the Troubadors
Last night I watched Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo on network tv, which is a hilarious movie that is even able to stand up to mild censorship, editing for tv and an immense amount of commercials.
One of the things I noticed was that Deuce Bigalow employs an almost identical plot device towards the end as does another classic comedy, Wayne’s World. In both movies, the sexually-aggressive & threateningly-suave alpha-male (Antoine in Deuce, and Rob Lowe in Wayne’s World) is waylaid by an ally of the beta-male (Deuce & Wayne) acting as a law enforcement officer. Both characters are subjected to a full-cavity anal search in order to prevent them from appearing at a certain location at a certain time.
The message to me is pretty clear, that the law enforcement officer is a symbol of “moral regulation” within the society which restricts and punishes the male who is too sexually strong, with an “anal invasion” which is the feared ultimate inversion of heterosexual strength. It’s also interesting to note the movie’s underlying social message, which is that Deuce Bigalow, without having sex outside of love, is able to give women more pleasure and satisfaction (with his “magical mangina”) than the professionally-sexual gigolo, Antoine.
I think this represents and results from several cultural streams coming together. One, is the rise of feminism, which ultimately downplays the validity of sexual aggression (alpha male) as an appropriate male behavior. Two, is the fact that a disproportionate amount of cultural content-producers are in fact beta-males, who have the leisure time and imagination to concoct sexual fantasies which portray them as being stronger than alpha males, through their use of humor, intelligence and heart, rather than physicality. Third, I might even go so far as to connect Deuce Bigalow to the tradition of “romantic love” which was brought to the fore in western culture by the Troubadors, wherein true love trumps every other card in the deck.
