False Messiahs

There is an interesting article over at New World Disorder which relates some information about apocryphal beliefs that Jesus was sexually active. Plus it goes into some details on a few different people who arose in the Middle Ages who claimed to be messiahs. Most of them were assassinated by the Church, which is not surprising. Towards the end of the article, it starts to ramble on about some Luciferian cults and stuff, which is neither that interesting or relevant. Actually, the best part of the whole thing is the stuff about the false messiahs. How bout I just recap the highlights of that for you here:

  1. Moses of Crete appeared around the time of Constantine. He claimed to be the returned Biblical Moses and amassed a huge army of followers. He was supposed to part the waters of some sea, and lead his army across to victory. But the story goes that the soldiers entered the water and drowned. He disappeared.
  2. 589 AD France, somebody named the Messiah of Gevaudon appeared. He wore animal skins and performed healings of the sick. Church leaders had him assassinated.
  3. 1144 AD France, a fellow named Eon de Stella claimed to be a Messiah and formed his own church. He was captured and starved by church leaders.
  4. Tanchelm of Antwerp was said to be the most famous of the “false” messiahs in the 12th centure. He also amassed a huge following and an enormous fortune, and was eventually assassinated by a priest.

I’ll have to look into all of this some more, because it’s pretty interesting and I’ve never heard of any of these gents before. I wonder just how many “false messiahs” the church has had executed. I bet the number is extremely high. I also kind of wonder whether or not any of them were actually “real” messiahs, if you believe in that sort of thing. Like maybe God just keeps sending all these different reincarnations of Christ, but they just keep getting killed over and over.

PS. That New World Disorder site has a weblog which I would very much like to check out in more detail. I might also try to submit an article to them, since they seem to be right up my alley. Also noticed that there is something by or about Bruce Eisner over at NWD.
