From the BBC, there are reports of the discovery of what could prove to be a new species of giant ape in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Apparently, they are supposed to look more like gorillas, but also possess a lot of characteristics similar to chimpanzees. Scientists aren’t really sure yet if they are a new species or an offshoot of one of those. Local villagers say these apes are vicious and have supposedly been known to even kill lions.

One of the biggest worries is that since news has spread of a new rare animal that poachers will wipe them out before scientists can have a chance to study them or set up conservation efforts. That would totally suck.
