Christopher Columbus loved the sluts

So, I just found out a hilariously awesome fact about the ships Christopher Columbus sailed in. Apparently, the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria are actually the cleaned up version of the names of the ships. Their true names were changed by the Church historians because they all related to prostitutes:

Everybody remembers the names of Columbus’s ships were the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria, for example, but few know that before the church censored the names, his rotting caravels were called the Nina (the girl, or rather, the “working” girl); the Pintada (or the “painted” one; i.e. the girl wearing make-up, in other words, the prostitute) and the Maria Galante (the surname of another “lady of leisure”).

I also just happened across this piece claiming that Christopher Columbus’ real name was Giovanni Griego, and he was a known pirate in the employ of the King of Portugal. Also, this site claims that the reason he knew where the New World was and how to get there was because he stole the maps and charts of several sailors who shipwrecked near his home on an island southwest of Portugal. This story reminds me quite a bit of that Simpsons episode where Lisa discovers that the heroic town founder, Jebediah Springfield, was actually a murderous pirate named Hans Sprungfeld.
