There is an awesome article about the future of the entertainment business on Wired. It’s called the Long Tail. Essentially, the article talks about how our entertainment industry up until this point has been necessarily dictated by “hit mentality.” That is, only things which have a mass appeal will ever appear in the mainstream. If it can not sell x number of units in all of y markets, then the content does not get distributed, because it’s not worth it for the distributors. He goes into some detail about how services like Amazon, eBay, Netflix and others are successful because they are able to drive up their sales by a huge amount thanks to being able to offer non-hit, non-mainstream items in its collection.
It’s really interesting, and anybody with an eye for the entertainment industry and how it works, and how it could work should read it. It really sows the seeds for what I think are a lot of great business models.
