Get ready for implanted microchips

Just when you thought the word “microchip” had disaeooeared from the language, the FDA has gone ahead and approved an implantable data chip for use inside the human body. Made by a company called VeriChips, they are the size of a grain of rice and are able to transmit a serial number via radio frequency. The serial number can then be connected to other information sources (databases).

With the pinch of a syringe, the microchip is inserted under the skin in a procedure that takes less than 20 minutes and leaves no stitches.

Silently and invisibly, the dormant chip stores a code — similar to the identifying UPC code on products sold in retail stores — that releases patient-specific information when a scanner passes over the chip.

Yeah right these are just going to be used for medical purposes. In Mexico, they were used to control who could access to sensitive documents in a government office. I’m sure we’ll think up much more restrictive uses, here in the world capital of freedom.
