Divination & Projection into stories
Futuristicky has a link up to a divination system based on Ogham, which is the supposed Druid tree alphabet. It’s roughly analogous to the I Ching, the Tarot or to casting runes. I really like this author’s explanation into the non-mystical value of divination systems:
- …One way they do work for people is by giving us an alternative context in which to understand our experience. We have our own story explaining our lives; a divination system can provide a different framework into which we can place the facts, and this change in emphasis can give us insights.
I think that’s probably one of the smartest and most concise explanations of what divination systems are for. It’s like, you have your running autobiographical story of your life. Which is useful, but its also really easy to get trapped in your own thinking and become blinded to certain things. Then you have this self-contained set of symbols and relationships which is contained within the divination systems. By taking elements from your life, and trying to see how they match up with the alternative divination system, you uncover hidden meanings and relationships by changing your context and perspective.
Essentially, you project yourself into the story-system of the divination, and then look around and make observations. I love it. Actually, this is a whole lot like what I just described in terms of cognitive dissonance and syncretic religions. The embracing of dissonances between two systems can yield insights and hidden relationships within both systems.
