I just happened across what looks to be one of the major online services whereby various organizations broadcast their press releases directly to news media companies. It’s called the US Newswire. It’s interesting because it seems to be the statements of the groups themselves before they get turned into news articles or other types of content.
It has a long page of all the groups who contribute press releases. They are labelled as “news sources”. They include:
- Political Campaigns / Organizations
- Federal Government / Congress / Cabinet Agencie
- Foreign Embassies
- Associations / Unions / Advocacy / Civic Groups
- Colleges & Universities
- Think Tanks / Research Organizations
- Public Relations / Public Affairs / Law Firms
- Media / Public Relations / News Services
There is a page which features the most recent press releases from the above groups. It makes for some really interesting pre-newsroom reading. There is also an RSS feed available. Wow, this is a really excellent far-reaching information source. I can especially see the value in using this site as a means of tracking down information in news articles which was uncritically included without modification from the original organizational press releases. I’m surprised I’ve never heard of this site before.
